Bart is originally from Belgium.  He came to Canada work with his brother, Stefaan.  They have Akela’s Den Sled Dog Supplies.  Bart and his girl friend  Karinna Damm are planning on becoming permanent residents in this area .  When he entered this race his goal was to have a nice windup to his racing season, have fun and to meet all their friends on the trail one last time this season.  He hopes to complete the race without dropping any dogs and finish with a healthy team.  If everything goes as planned, in 1st place. He is just returning from the famous Yukon Quest race, the first musher from Saskatchewan to ever enter that event.  Bart will be running their core team of dogs from the kennel; one last time as some will be sold.

Marc loves running dogs, just being out in the forest alone with them.  He entered the race because; being from Belgium, he never had the chance to do any distance racing.  This will be his first time to race this far.  He will be driving their young team, so he wants the dogs to have fun and enjoy their first race too!  Akela’s Den gave him the opportunity to experience our beautiful country, to learn more about dogs and a chance to run this race.  His leaders are Canadian Challenge Champions. We wish him luck and hope that he takes home many great memories.

Gerry is a retired cattle rancher and spent many years competing successfully on the professional rodeo circuit competing in bull riding and all round cowboy events. One of the first things that he learned about driving dogs was that he could get bucked off a dog sled and get dragged also. His extensive knowledge of genetics, nutrition, just plain animal no how, and quest for learning makes him a very strong contender in any race. Gerry is lucky to often have one of his 4 daughters or son in laws help him on a training run. He is looking forward to a time when one or more of his grandchildren join him on the sled. Gerry's goal is always to be a winner, but he is always happy to finish in any position with a healthy dog team
BRAD MUIR, Waskesiu  SK

Occupation:  Park Naturalist and  Dog Musher
Handler:  Marcia Klein
Kennel:  Sundogs
Kennel Bloodlines:  Tomkins, and Akela’s Den
Years running dogs:  15
Races Finished:  Percy DeWolfe in the Yukon -9th, the only distance race.

Brad has been operating Sundog Excursions for a number of years, so is very experienced with running dogs. The Tomkins took him under their wing and the dogs did the rest to get Brad out exploring the northern forest. He entered this race because after being around marathon racing for 12 years, and with only one start to his name, Brad figured he owed it to his working dogs and himself.  This race for us is to enjoy the rush , the intensity, the highs and even the lows as they inevitably come from time to time, to go headlong into the beautiful boreal  forest in the most raw of seasons. To learn more about my dogs and perhaps myself, in a way that only distance racing can provide. He is an entertainer and in his one race he composed and sang all across Alaska and the Yukon Territory. When asked about his outstanding dogs – He hoped most of the team will be out and standing strong at the finish line.  Good Luck, Brad!

Handler: Colleen, his wife
Kennel:  Buckaroo Bend
Kennel Bloodlines: Tomkins, Carrier and Colby Morrison
Years running dogs: 6 years
Races Finished:  Canadian Challenge 3 X in the top 5, Candle Lake Races
Lyle's goal for this race is to enjoy the race and the scenery and to finish in good standing.  He runs dogs mainly because he enjoys running them on his trapline.  But it is an addiction!!  The dogs he is running have all been in and finished the Challenge at least once.  His main leaders are Jack & Prez.  All of his dogs are outstanding to him; they have never let me down.
